United Public Workers Endorse Democrat Ige for Governor

HONOLULU –  Democratic candidate for governor Senator David Ige received an endorsement from the United Public Workers, AFSCME Local 646, which represents nearly 14,000 of Hawaii’s blue-collar workers in both the public and private sectors. UPW members are employees from local schools and hospitals to airports and correctional facilities, including EMTs, nurses, technical staff, maintenance staff, custodians, janitors, refuse collectors, heavy equipment operators and many other hardworking citizens. “Democrat Senator David Ige has a proven track record of fighting for workers and the everyday person trying to make an honest living to support themselves and their families,” said UPW State Director Dayton Nakanelua. “Growing up in a working class family, raising a family of three plus his work in the private sector and the Legislature, make him the best candidate to improve education, expand job creation and grow Hawaii’s economy.” “I’m honored to receive an endorsement from the United Public Workers because they are one of the oldest local unions that helped to give a voice to underpaid, underserved...

Equality Hawaii Action Fund Endorses Ige-Tsutsui

HONOLULU  – Democratic gubernatorial candidate Senator David Ige and Lieutenant Governor Shan Tsutsui both received an endorsement from Equality Hawaii Action Fund, a nonprofit dedicated to securing equality for Hawaii’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. “The fight to win marriage was a real milestone, but other issues now demand our attention and energy,” said Jacce Mikulanec, chair of Equality Hawaii Action Fund. “We’re proud to stand with Sen. Ige and Lt. Gov. Tsutsui this fall because they understand that there is still work to do and that effective leadership can help bend the arc of the moral universe more quickly toward justice.” Equality Hawaii noted Senator Ige’s strong and consistent leadership on LGBT community issues. Last fall, the state attorney general confirmed that Senate Bill 1, the Marriage Equality Act, was constitutional per Senator Ige’s request for his opinion, which helped to relieve the concerns of some lawmakers. Lt. Governor Tsutsui also supported SB-1, and as a state senator in 2010, voted in favor of Hawaii’s civil unions...
